Learn, Don't Return - Chihuahua Dog Breed

Posted by Brian Aho on

The History of the Chihuahua lineage dates back to ancient times and wasn't a breed confined to Mexico either.

History shows a dog breed similar to the Chihuahua throughout the world in carvings and pottery.

But in Mexico, the Chihuahua dates back to the Mayans - they called the now-extinct breed the Techichis - folks we're talking about 500 BC! More recently, only around 300 BC, the Mexican civilization called the Toltecs also were credited with fostering the Techichis dog breed.

The Toltecs were conquered by the Aztecs even more recently in the 12th century and they took over the Techichis lineage.

You may ask yourself, how do you know? Short answer - we don't.

You can make the judgment yourself, but the common thread is the size, shape, and coat - a very short coat is represented in the carvings and pottery.

Comment below if you believe the Techichis is the Chihuahua. We'll get into more depth in the complete video.

The Form and Function of the Chihuahua - and like many dog breeds in the past, which were only for Kings and Queens, Nobleman, Pharaohs, and in the case of the Chihuahua, were only for the Huey Tlatoani which translates to the emperor.

All signs say that the Techici, which is the historical name for the Chihuahua lineage, was part of ritual ceremonies and even a deity.

The Chihuahua still has the arrogance from its Techichi days of living on the throne, however, now anybody can adopt a Chihuahua.

But they are still a companion dog breed.

The Techichi had a short coat but now the Chihuahua comes in both long and short coats, which, depending on the coat, makes them better suited for warm or cold temperatures.

Can you guess which AKC Group the Chihuahua is in?

If you said the Terrier group, which with its stubborn personality is not a stretch.

But no, the Chihuahua is actually in the Toy Group.

Wait until you hear about the Chihuahua history - truly amazing! And do you know what's also interesting about the Chihuahua, the Chihuahua is not in the Terrier group.

The Chihuahua is actually in the AKC Toy group, with breeds like the Chinese Crested, Miniature Pinscher, and the Shih Tzu. Learn, Don't Return has covered the Shih Tzu here.

And like the Shih Tzu the Mexican Chihuahua is an ancient breed that was symbolized in ancient artwork and both were sacred deities associated with gods.

The Chihuahua was associated with the god of lightning and death.

Folks we're talking about 500 BC in the Mayan civilization, when the Chihuahua was called the Techichis.

And after the Mayans, the Toltec civilization carried on the Techichis legacy which was only 300 BC.

More recently the Aztecs, which conquered the Toltecs in the 12th century, continued to worship the Chihuahua.

No wonder the little guys have a determined personality, they've been in charge of some of the greatest civilizations on earth!

Coming back down to earth, the Chihuahua entered the United States in the mid-19th century, can you guess which region the Chihuahua came from in Mexico?

If you said the State of Chihuahua you get a point.

Congratulations!

While the Chihuahua is no longer a deity they sure don't know that based on their personality.

They're still bossing everybody around! If I didn't know better, I'd think the Chihuahua was in the Terrier Group.

Their personality is like my favorite fruit - also from Mexico, the Jalapeno...very spicy!

A point if you knew the Jalapeno was a fruit.

The Chihuahua is a lap dog only weighing 3 to 7 pounds.

But do you know what isn't light, the number of years the Chihuahua can live, between 12 and 20 years!

Because I like you, another point!

The Chihuahua is alert and smart and you also should be alert and smart and take your time doing Chihuahua breeder or rescue research.

The Chihuahua is a long commitment! And you should commit to feeding high-quality food from a tiny 1/2 pint stainless bowl.

And at petzpaws.com use the discount code for Chihuahua  for10% off (human) dog walking apparel.

If you want to show a Chihuahua in conformation the eyes can't be bulging, but they can be any color, and they should be social and friendly.

They are great family pets, but - due to their small size - a home with young kids could be dangerous for the tiny Chihuahua.

Also, a home with big dogs could be risky!

Upkeep consists of clipping the nails, and occasionally using a soft bristle brush on the Smooth Coat Chihuahua; the Long Coat Chihuahua will need to be brushed and bathed more frequently.

And don't forget teeth cleaning either by you or a veterinarian - you don't want to have a toothless Chihuahua.

Don't laugh, it can happen!

Giving your Chihuahua a bone or chew toy will help!

And because the Chihuahua has a spicy personality, get them in training ASAP; don't worry - they are smart dogs and will pick up what you're throwing down.

Also, seek a training partner that has experience in AKC events like rally, tracking, obedience, and agility - to further develop your bond; send us a video @petzpaws - we're on all the social media sites...I would love to watch your Chihuahua participating in these events!

The AKC recognized the Chihuahua in 1904 and the Long Coat Chihuahua was recognized in 1952.

Supporting the Chihuahua - the Chihuahua Club of America was formed in 1923.

Can you guess where the Chihuahua ranks in popularity according to the AKC?

If you said 32, you are spot on!

Another point!
